Awasis Boutique is the 1st Indigenous inspired baby and kids fashion line in Western Canada, Christine Marie, a proud Indigenous mother of two, is the founder behind the brand, the shop was launched as an online store in February 2018 and my selling model also includes partnering with local retailers who already have a storefront and purchase products from me at a wholesale cost, with some of my retail partnerships including the Royal University Hospital and Wanuskewin Heritage Park, items made include baby drool bibs, headbands, and swaddle blankets using Indigenous-themed prints, a few of which are my own custom designs featuring Cree syllabics and images, and some of the most popular items include my onesies and tees collection that feature phrases in Cree and English such as "Bannock Baby," "Just jigging," "I love Kokum," and "Peyak," and since COVID-19 hit, I have assembled a team of local seamstresses to help fill the need for sewing non-medical face masks, what people love most about the brand is that it is authentically Indigenous—from the maker to the majority of the products—and you’d be surprised how hard it is to find authentic fabrics designed and sold by Indigenous makers, I am thrilled to have tapped into this market and see much opportunity in this field ahead, and the mission is to continue promoting and celebrating the vast beauty of Indigenous culture one product at a time, so in summary, with my skills as a designer and seamstress, I can provide Indigenous-themed fabrics that are authentic, sewn garments for babies and kids, onesies for babies, tees and sweaters for babies, kids, and adults, and non-medical face masks for kids (over 4 years old) and adults.
